- This week with Stevie Smith - Sunday, September 17, 2006

This week in Modern British poetry we stepped into the world of Stevie Smith. Had the pleasure of reading poetry that includes morbid thoughts as well as cynical thoughts and a little black comedy.

I read a few poems by Stevie Smith. One of our required poems to read was Pretty. What I liked about this poem was its witty play on the word pretty. It begins with the line "Why is the word pretty so underrated?" As the stanza continues, pretty is used consistently in each line. The word is overused so much, that the word pretty looses its power. We even see the word used on things in nature that would not be considered pretty, such as the water rat. At the end of the poem Stevie uses pretty to describe death. That one will cry pretty so much, that they won't even be able to cry pretty anymore. That even being delivered from humanity is pretty in itself.
