- Stupidity - Saturday, February 11, 2006

Okay so I need to make a statement on stupidity. I personally don't really care about Charles Barkley or the statements he makes about Oklahoma, but I took it personally when he made the statement that the only black people in Oklahoma are the sooners and the hornets. Now let me explain why this offended me. For most of my life I have had to defend myself in my community. I take education very seriously and ebonics is not a language I care to ever learn. So when I speak, I use proper English. I also teach my son to use proper English. So on the surface, I'm not up to date on street language. I also don't care for rap but sometimes I listen to a few songs. Also, I'm a registered Republican who can sometimes have very conservative beliefs. So yes I usually have to defend myself with my family and some of my friends who watch nothing but BET. But I took Barkley's statement as stereotypical. That all black people can do is play sports. That to be black requires you to play sports and project the image of a thug. For him to disrespect the many doctors, lawyers, politians, nurses, teachers, police officers, firefighters, etc. was uncalled for. Do I expect the man to apologize, NO. Do I expect him to realize that his statement alone put black people back decades, NO. What I do expect is for him to realize that his stupidity just confirms that some people should not have the right to free speech. I'm not going to get off on a tangent, because I'm sure most people could care less what I think about his statement. For me as one who is very proud of who I am, I take offense to the statement. He has called me a sellout. Why do I say this? Because he is quite aware that Oklahoma is not full of Anglo Saxon faces, basically he has stated that everyone else is not black in his eyes. I find myself reading a quote by Mr. Barkley stated in an interview in Leeds, Alabama about what he believed Dr. King would think today if he were alive

"He would really be thrilled with some of the racial advances that have been made, but he would be really disappointed in the way some people act..."

I say Mr. Barkely, you should live by your own words. You are one of those people that would disappoint him with your actions.
